PENANG ASSAM LAKSA - Penang Street Food

Penang Assam Laksa - the famous dish that launched Malaysia into stardom in the world of food. Ranked 7th in CNN's "World's 50 Most Delicious Foods" 2011 list, a visit to Penang is not complete without trying this bowl of heavenly goodness!

An interesting fact about the Penang Assam Laksa is that it is the only noodle dish in Penang to have a fish-based broth. Its fish broth is made from poached, boned mackerels stewed together with lemongrass, chillies and assam (tamarind).
The tangy aromatic fish broth is served with thick rice vermicelli and garnished with finely chopped bunga kantan (ginger flower bud), sliced onions, cucumber, lettuce, red chillies or cili padi, mint leaves, and drizzled with the deliciously thick 'Hae Ko' (prawn paste). Hae ko lends a distinctly prawn flavour that sets the Penang Assam Laksa apart from the other types of laksa sold in Malaysia
The price for each bowl is around RM3.00. It is a halal dish.
